What Should I Wear to My Family Photo Shoot?

Are you wondering what to wear to your family photo shoot? It’s a good question, and many of my clients ask that same thing. At our in-home style and concept consultation, ahead of the shoot, we can discuss what you and your family should wear to a family photo shoot so you’re prepared before hand.

Family Photo Shoot

There are a number of different factors to consider, here are a few tips:

First off, it’s important to remember we’re in Florida, so it’ll be warm and or hot no matter what time of day the family photo shoot takes place, so it’s important to dress for the weather. You don’t want to have photos that are showing sweat stains. Not only that, but you want to be comfortable. If you’re sweating during the shoot, you’ll be stressed, and that will show in your photos.

You also want to wear something that’s cohesive with the type of photos you’ll be taking. If the photos are going to be of a serious nature, then wear something more restrictive, such as a a formal suit and tie and formal dress. If they are more playful, then wear something flowing and light for the ladies, and something light or shorts for the men. You could even be barefooted.

This also applies to the location. If your photo shoot is on a beach, or in a park, it is more likely to be a more relaxed type photo shoot, so you would want the clothing to be more relaxed.

The type of clothing is also going to be reflective of your shoot style. Are you going to be playing with your children? Would you be splashing in the water? Will you be twirling about in the sand or playing with a ball? It’s all up to you.

I always like people to dress for the walls. Weird, I know – but I want you to be able to proudly display your family portrait in your home. Pick a color palette and run with that compliments your interior or style. Light colors like white can look nice, but be aware that if you’re at the beach it might wash you out. If you’re taking sunset photos, try to stay away from orange colors as they will bring out orange tones in the skin and may blend in with the sky too much.

Avoid letters and words on clothing. We think that family portraits should be timeless and words on clothes can really date a photo and be distracting.
